Introduction

COMSATS University Islamabad is a well-known seat of higher learning in Pakistan. Its mission is investing in the personal, academic and professional growth of students. The investment in students requires a financial partnership between the university and students. CUI as an organization believes that no one should be deprived of getting education merely on the grounds of inability to pay. CUI launched its financial support program to facilitate the needy/deserving students. To implement this, an office is established at CUI Vehari Campus by the name of Financial Aid Office. The Students Financial Aid Office will provide an opportunity for talented students who are financially incapable of meeting costs of education at CUI. It will also improve access to higher education, especially to those who are from far flung areas of Pakistan. Various Scholarships/financial assistance schemes are provided under the banner of Students Financial Aid Office (SFAO).

Kinship/Siblings Award

When two or more siblings are concurrently students of CUI the siblings will be financially supported. A financial support of up to Rs.8000/- per Semester will be provided to all the siblings provided the parents cannot afford to pay the fee and the students show good academics performance.

HEC Needs Based Scholarship

In Pakistan, currently, less than 8% of the 17-23 age group is enrolled in any form of higher education that is amongst the lowest in the world. The estimated population of this age group will be 30 million by the year 2015. In fact, it is a great resource that can be better exploited by providing necessary learning and grooming opportunities. An overwhelming majority of this group is from poor and deprived families. Among the major issues, that Higher Education (HE) Sector of Pakistani is currently facing, is Low enrollment and inequitable opportunities for Higher Education. It is mainly due to the non-availability of enough finances. The financial need for higher education is, perhaps, a remarkable actor to make the bright and studious students to leave their studies uncompleted or, even worse, not to get admission at all in the institution of their choice.

Needs based scholarships would be an answer to offset the challenge of financial constraints. Although in the majority of public sector universities the tuition fee is subsidized but it is still unaffordable for most of the students. Since 35 percent of the Pakistani population is living below the poverty line, it is almost impossible get the higher education for this segment of the society.

The activity will enable the 90 needy young people especially from underdeveloped areas (FATA, KPK, Southern Punjab, Baluchistan, and Northern Sindh) of Pakistan to pursue their education in top universities / institutions of Pakistan.

The objective is to provide equal opportunity for the talented students who are at disadvantage being incapable of meeting cost of education at leading higher education institutions. This program will help in poverty alleviation by providing grooming and learning opportunities for the middle and lower middle class students who will have better job and business opportunities after completing their education.

Ehsaas Undergraduate Scholarship Program

Education beyond intermediate is one of the ways to overcome poverty. However, access to higher education is itself distributed very unevenly. For example, only 0.4% of the children from the lowest income quintile (from the relevant age cohort) are enrolled in higher education institutions, which is far below the national average of 10%. Ehsas scholarships aim to eliminate this source of unequal access.

According to the National Human Development Report 2017, Pakistan is one of the youngest country in the world. Realizing its demographic reality which has a population of around 220 million out of which more than half are of university age cohort, the priority of Government of Pakistan is to work on such programs which give drive to provide access to financially deserving and also encourages gender equity. The strategy is to create opportunities for a sizeable segment of youth to bring them under the net of higher education and create equal education opportunities for all.
